Big money...a warning tale
Wherefore do John Gresham's books sell so good consistently? He's found a winning formula, as each deals different lawful issue that he finds emotional about, in this case, the practise in Mississippi of electing judges instead of having them named. As in his other novels, there's a hero who's also a victim, very sympathetic but also real callow, and there's a scoundrel, really powerful and with seemingly endless resources. There's a varied cast of colourful roles. In a past interview, Gresham tells that he spends many time on patch because he wants to give his readers the best reading experience he could and it shows up. That's why his books are so interesting, their fundamental seriousness is generally ignored. But very much like the books of Upton Sinclair, Gresham's books have agendas that are most serious indeed.
Among his best, if not the best, The Appeal is great Grisham book. It plays by acting on issue of the day - back-room political science, dirty artifice, greed, the resistless appeal of world power, manipulation of the voting public, what we know happens but, too much, can do nothing to battle. It's all here in a insuperable read you won't bring down.
You really have to read it !!

Grisham's beginning legal thriller since the Broker (2005) is a riveting and obliging read that will be difficult to disgrace. This is a workable strategy since Mississippi chosens their Supreme Court justices and 69% of its electors know small about the courtroom candidates.
The "Appeal" offers a believable primer on how to rig an election - beak a victim; advertize an unknown prospect with no visible commemorate; and ambuscade the victim by painting him/her as a intense ideologue (this free judge will destroy the family). Done well...and the election action is corrupted.
